Kvadrat's Semis carpet is the result of two years of intensive work and research by Paris-based designer Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec. The carpet convinces by the points arranged in different densities and heights, whereby the surface of the knotted carpet varies in a refined way. The result is an abstract landscape that resembles an aerial photograph or the arrangement of plants in a field.
The carpet is available in a version with small dots and with large dots. There are two colour variants to choose from. Black and white in positive and negative variations. The carpets offer a scale from a predominantly black to a predominantly white surface. The unmistakable shape of the carpet, a rectangle with cut corners, is highlighted by the pattern of dots that sit along a regular grid in the middle and become more irregular above and below.
Made from handspun Tibetan wool, the production of semis is particularly time-consuming, using the fine but remarkably strong Tibetan knotting technique. For a 200 cm wide carpet three weavers work together in Nepal and complete up to 7 cm daily. After knotting, the carpet is washed and trimmed with scissors. The deliberate irregularity of the cut edges creates a beautiful random surface with a handmade note.
For the Bouroullecs it is these small variations - in the shape of the dots, in the trimming and in the fact that different weavers create a carpet - that give each Semis carpet a special, personal touch.
