The Finnish designer Eero Aarnio is known for the design of plastic furniture and for characteristic designs without any corners and edges. He designed Pony in 1972, which is a playful seat looking like a pony, reminding us of an oversized toy, considered to be an icon today.
But the creation of a toy wasn't Eero Aarnio's original idea, since he wanted to develop exceptional chairs.
"A chair is a chair, is a chair, is a chair ... but a seat does not necessarily have to be a chair. It can be anything as it is ergonomically correct. A seat could even be a small and soft Pony on which you can 'ride' or sit sideways." Eero Aarnio.
The original dimensions of the Pony chair were adapted to those of an adult, which is the reason why the object doesn't only fit in the children's room, but also in other rooms to be used as chair or decoration object.
The current edition of the Pony of Studio Aarnio appears in smaller dimensions and it is therefore hardly comfortable because of the lack of cushioning. Eero Aarnio only used plastic for this new version, to make the Pony usable outside. The Pony is still decorative and it fascinates adults as well with its round, almost comic-like outlines.
