Alvar Aalto is deemed to be one of the most important Scandinavian designers and architects of the 20th century. His chair with the number 66 he designed in the year 1935. In the same year Aalto founded the company Artek which still produces the chair, with his wife Aino.
Influenced by the German Bauhaus Alvar Aalto experimented to work with laminated wood since 1927. Natural materials and organic forms became characteristics of his designs. This is also shown in the Chair 66 which completely consists of birch wood and which has numerous curves and round spaces.
The seat area of the Chair 66 is carried by legs that are fixes under the chair without a frame or other supporting elements beneath the seat. The necessary bending of wood for this was a technical innovation when the chair first emerged. Aalto experimented with this technique since 1929 together with Otto Korhohen. The resulting L-form of the chairs legs still guarantees an unsurpassed stability today.
The spacey backrest from the Chair 66 is fixed at the two hind legs. Also at this part round forms define the appearance. Organic and bounded wood constructions like they make up the Chair 66 are Alvar Aaltos brand label. He consciously opposed to the cold machines aesthetic s and the artificial material of modern times.
The Chair 66 form Artek is available in various colours and also in an upholstered variant. The chair is delivered disassembled.
