Besides some other tables that Alvar Aalto designed for the Viipuri library, also the table 81B emerged in the year 1935. The whole series comprises several table dimensions, down to extendable variants, as well as four-legged, three-legged with round, half round and later on square table-boards.
The table feet are just like the Viipuri-chairs out of birch plywood to form an L: The first success of Aaltos experiments, to bent plywood. With these researches he reached exceptional results; weightless swinging furniture pieces that didn't found equals in the 1930s or later.
The rectangular table 81B can be useful as side-table or couch table, but also as a decorative piece of furniture for entrance halls or as a night-table. The four legs of the table consist of bright lacquered nature-birch, as well as the original design, whereas the 4 cm thick board appears in different versions: birch veneer, white laminate or black linoleum.
The table is also available with HL1-legs.
