Artek - 60 Stool, black / black
The stackable stool 60 was designed by Alvar Aalto in the year 1933 and initially produced by O.y. Huonekalu – ja Rakennustyötehdas. After founding Artek in the year 1935 the stool was introduced in the standard assortment of Artek In the 1940es this three-legged stool became a famous best-seller. The renowned design emerged for the Viipuri library and went arround the world.
The minimalistic and functional design was a revolution in its origin. Instead of the usual steel, the architect and designer Alvar Aalto used birch wood, a material that was bulky available in Finland. This is why the unusual stool was also affordable for poorer families. And to pursue tradition, Artek still manufactures the stool 60 with bended, massive birch veneer.
By means of a bend-technique that Aalto invented, the wood is bended; legs and seat are glued like this, building an optical unity. The stool has a 39.5 cm height and its seat has a 43 cm diameter. The stool is available in several versions: bright, black or white lacquered. Furthermore with a black linoleum or white laminate seat, as well as cloth or leather upholstered.
In the event of the 80th anniversary of the 60 Stool, Artek presented some special editions of it with coloured seats, as well as limited editions with different patterns of different artists.
