The Ulmer Stool in different colours

Whether as simple stool, as unobtrusive side table, bedside table or mobile tray for books and magazines – the Ulmer Stool by Max Bill is a popular classic piece of furniture.

The Ulmer Stool was designed by Max Bill in 1954. He was the first director of the Ulmer University of Design HfG. Max Bill designed the stool in cooperation with Hans Gugelot for the students of the HfG. Since money was rare, teachers started to create some chairs for their students on their own. The stool had the advantage that it was easy to be transported but still very stable, being also suitable for the students to carry their books.

The design was only directed to functionality: The round bar (initially made out of a broomstick) gave stability to the stool and it also served to transport it. That's how it suits as versatile chair, side table or shelf nit also as transport tray, serving tray or table top. The Ulmer stool is a good example for the creativity of people when there are few resources.

The stool is an absolute design classic today! Its popularity grew in the last years, not at last since it was versatile to be used and formally reserving. It fits in public places such as museums, galleries, shopping stores, offices, hotels or schools as well as in private rooms.

The colourful edition was developed in cooperation with Jakob Bill, the only son of Max Bill, according to the original graphics and paintings of Max Bill.
