David Chipperfield

English architect David Chipperfield was born in 1953 in London. He graduated from the Architects Association in London and was trained by Douglas Stephen, Richard Rogers and Norman Foster from 1978 – 1984.

In 1984, Chipperfield worked independently in London and founded another office in Berlin only three years later. By now, there is another office in Milan and an outpost in Shanghai. More than 130 employees work in his offices, winning Chipperfield more than 40 national and international competitions as well as a similar number of international awards.

Among others, Chipperfield has designed the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, the award-winning River and Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames and the Literature Museum of Modern Age as part of the German literature archive in Marbach. Chipperfield's buildings are located all around the world, but the majority are in Japan and Germany.

In 1997, Chipperfield was commissioned by the "Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz" to develop a plan for the Berlin Museum Island and the reconstruction of the Neues Museum. Furthermore, he is working on the James Simon Gallery. This is a planned building on the Berlin Museum Island.

Besides his work as an architect, Chipperfield also creates design products for renowned manufacturers such as Alessi. Furthermore he teaches at several universities: He was a professor at the State Academy of Visual Arts in Stuttgart and taught at Harvard University, the University of Graz, the University of Naples and he is still a guest professor at the University of the Arts in London. Additionally he holds the Mies van der Rohe professorship at the Escola Tècnica Superior D'Arquitectura in Barcelona.
