Stefano Giovannoni

Stefano Giovannoni

Stefano Giovannoni, born in La Spezia in 1954, graduated in 1978 in Architecture in Florence. Right after the graduation he began to teach at several universities, he became engaged in design research. Nowadays, he is a master-professor at the Domus Academy in Milan and at the University del Progetto in Reggio Emilia.

In 1985, Giovannoni founded the Studio King Kong together with Guido Venturini. They had the goal of investigating the architecture and the design of ordinary household items, interior spaces and fashion. In 1989, Giovannoni and Venturini created the successful accessory series Girotondo for Alessi together.

During the 90s, Stefano Giovannoni designed several very famous products own his own for renowned companies such as Flos, Magis, Seiko, Pulsar, Cappelini, Kankyo, Saab, etc.

In contradiction to angled forms and cold rigour, Giovannoni's conceptions stand out with humorous and playful design. However, the reduction of his creations to "fun-design" would be wrong, because he always relates unconventionality - which is typical for him to innovative functionality. His very successful bar stool Bombo, which he created for Magis in 1997, is the perfect example for his understanding of design.

Stefano Giovannoni's subjective design is shown in several international exhibitions and is also partly represented in the permanent collection of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
