Since more than 50 years, the museum intern MoMA Wholesales produces and distributes selected design and gift articles. The origin of this was the invitation of artists to design holiday postcards in that time. Since then, a wide selection of sophisticated products has developed: accessories for living and office rooms, decorative and practical, souvenirs and much more.

The Museum of Modern Art – short: MoMa – was especially founded by the three arts collectors Lilli P. Bliss, Mrs. Cornelius J. Sullivan and Mrs. John D. (Abby Aldrich) Rockefeller, jun. Only a few days after the historic exchange crash, the MoMa in New York opened its gates for the first time, directed by the then 27 years old director Alfred H. Barr, jun.

The intention of the three wealthy women was to encourage meetings with arts for the New York people. The first museum of America, which is only focused on the presentation and collection of contemporaneous art, still lies in private hands.

The first museum director Alfred H. Barr, jun. developed the museum concept which is still valid in its original shape. The core of this concept was to construct a house with several compartments, offering space to fine arts as well as to applied arts. His museum should occupy a great field of culture. The idea was to also place modern arts (especially of the 20th century) in a museum. This idea of the curator and president of the MoMA, Alfred H. Barr, jun. came out of the crone-prince palace in Berlin, the precursor of the new national gallery, where he worked before.

Barr has furthermore been delighted by the interdisciplinary approach, as it was e.g. practiced by the Dessau Bauhaus. The start of the museum wasn't the idea of an already existing collection that needed a suitable house to be presented in, but only organizing expositions with loaning rights, in the Museum of Modern Art, whereby also American contemporaneous art is presented besides the European modern.

The development of the collection ran systematically beginning in 1931. Today the museum includes the following curatorial departments: paintings and sculptures; drawings; graphic prints and illustrated books; architecture and design; photography as well as film, including video.

After the 70 million US $ expensive reconstruction of the Museum of Modern Art from 2002 to 2004, it was reopened in Manhattan in November of 2004.

Besides namely artworks of famous painters such as Marc Chagall, Salvador Dalí, Otto Dix, Pail Gaugin, Vinvent van Gogh or Roy Lichtenstein, to only name a few, the permanent exposition also includes works of famous architects and designers such as e.g. from Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Richard Sapper, Ettore Sottsass, Alvar Aalto, Peter Behrens, Richard Riemerschmid, the brothers Thonet, Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles and Ray Eames and many other famous and leading designers.
