The ashtray by Alessi consists of two elements and its design would be nowadays be called "classic" by most of the people. Because everybody knows the cylindrical form by heart, despite the fact that it became part of industrial design's birth only in 1926, which developed from traditional smithery at the Bauhaus metal workshop and has considerably shaped aesthetic ideas up until today.
The base is cylindrically formed and based on the fundamental element of the circle. A cone protrudes out of the middle that ends with the fundamental element of the sphere, namely as a semi-sphere. Here is exactly where the conical lid docks, so that the smells are always contained inside of the ashtray. The usage of geometrical forms is characteristic for Marianne Brandt, who designed the elegant object at the Dessau Bauhaus.
In this way, both smokers and non-smokers profit from the ashtray that has been produced by Alessi under the licence of the Bauhaus Archive Berlin.
