Indoor Outdoor Series by Bodil Kjær
In 1959, the Danish architect and professor Bodil Kjær designed an extensive furniture series for the US market, intended for both indoor and outdoor use. It bears the appropriate name Indoor Outdoor and is now being relaunched by Carl Hansen.
"When I designed the furniture in 1959, the aesthetics of outdoor furniture had no priority in the USA. They were mainly free-standing objects that had no connection whatsoever with contemporary architecture. For me, however, furniture was an architectural element whose size was to depend on the area in which it was placed. In this sense, outdoor furniture should also be adapted to the format of the building. In outdoor areas, furniture of a certain size is required to create a harmonious whole," explains Bodil Kjær, who brought her Scandinavian design approach to the USA in 1957.
Outdoor furniture with functional and aesthetic quality
Its architectural series is characterized by a high functional and aesthetic quality that is also suitable for interiors and is timelessly classic. For Bodil Kjær, dialogue with architecture has always been part of the design process and her work is always created for people. Many of her designs were linked to specific projects and fulfilled the desire for a strong aesthetic and functional relationship between buildings, spaces and interiors.
The furniture convinces with high comfort and develops an appealing patina over time. True to the philosophy that the size of a piece of furniture should be in harmony with its surroundings, the natural dimensions of the outside area played an important role in determining the size and appearance of this furniture.
