Herbert Krenchel

Herbert Krenchel

Herbert Krenchel was born in Denmark in 1922. He graduated with a master's in engineering from the Technical University of Denmark. The artist always worked simultaneously as a designer and researcher. Krenchel's research specialised in the areas of materials and fibre reinforcement.

In 1953, Herbert Krenchel opened his own design studio, where he designed the famous Krenit bowl for Danish company Torben Ørskov & Co in the same year. In the middle of the 50s Krenchel designed the Krenit melamine salad cutlery. Since 2008, a new design of the Krenchel Krenit has been produced by Normann Copenhagen.

Herbert Krenchel on his design philosophy: "I am excited about shapes and structures. The surface of an object is important because it makes people want to reach out and touch it. I also believe that there has to be a balance between function and aesthetics. Good design must contain more than one aspect to make the perfect overall impression. My inspiration comes from several things surrounding me – it can't be explained. For me design is a way to express yourself – it's a way to create things just the way I want it."
