Materious is a design studio of American husband and wife Stephanie and Bruce Tharp. The designers have worked together in Chicago since 2005, creating products that form relationships with the customers.
Stephanie Tharp studied mechanics before working as a development engineer for Ford. After two years of working for the automaker, she began to study again, graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design with a Master of Industrial Design. In Chicago, where Materious is based, Tharp teaches design.
In addition to holding a doctoral degree in anthropology, Bruce Tharp also has a Master in Industrial Design. He also teaches design in Chicago. Due to their similar yet different careers and interests, the couple's designs ideally complement one another.
Materious' work is based on the ambiguity of the English word "materious", which refers to the physical presence of an object as well as to it's meaning and relevance. The Tharps especially emphasise the relationship of their products and the user.
The Chicago-based design studio has already worked for many renowned brands and has begun to produce and to distribute their own creations for some time.
